You’re driving, listening to the radio and a song comes on that flips your happy switch. Immediately you’re in a better mood and ready to take on whatever the day throws at you! The song comes on and without any conscious effort we find ourselves in the present moment. Musicians describe it as being "in the flow" when they're performing, and it's a pretty apt description when we’re on the other end.
Is it the lyrics or is it the music? Regardless, there is definitely a mood-altering effect to music. Research has found that when we listen to music, it triggers a release of dopamine to the brain. And if you don’t know, dopamine is a kind of naturally occurring happy chemical we receive as part of a reward system. It’s no surprise that in the scene of a meditation or yoga class, music is often playing to enhance the experience of mindfulness.
Mindful music listening can be a wonderful way to reduce your stress and reconnect with your body and breath. Mindfulness - the practice of being in the present moment - can be practiced anytime and anywhere. However, if you find mindfulness challenging (or haven’t tried it!) the addition of music can help you stay focused, while helping you to connect with music as a source of strength and creative energy. Music can be a powerful way to experience the present moment.
